‘If you want to destroy a culture, then destroy its language’
Join us for a screening of Gautam Pemmaraju’s latest documentary, ‘A Tongue Untied: The Story of Dakhani’, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker.
The documentary examines the rich history and culture of the Dakhani language, a vernacular form of Urdu spoken in the Deccan plateau since the 1300s. Pemmaraju focuses on the humour-satire poetic performances for which the language is best known, and more broadly, on the integral role of humour in a community’s language and culture.
This is a unique project by a talented filmmaker (more details on the film can be found here: http://dakhani.com) and promises to be an interesting event!
